The LBx Africa team is proud to announce our Netflix Africa debut with the critically acclaimed documentary, "Free Money". The streaming premiere is scheduled for September 1st, 2023.
This groundbreaking documentary, the first of three parts, captivated audiences during its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) last September. Its compelling narrative and striking execution led to rave reviews from reputable press outlets, including Hollywood Reporter, Deadline and Variety.
Over the past year, the film has been on a festival tour across the world, filling out cinemas at IDFA, CPH Dox, DocAviv, Durban International Film Festival, Encounters South African International Film Festival and Dok.Fest Munchen, among others.
A collaboration between LBx Africa and New York's Insignia Films, "Free Money" is a fascinating narrative directed by Lauren DeFilippo and Sam Soko. The documentary, filmed over half a decade, delves deep into the largest and longest-running universal basic income experiment in Kogutu, a village in Western Kenya.
Told through the eyes of its very inhabitants, the film skillfully navigates the complexities and challenges that arise when different worlds collide.
