Matabeleland returns to Kenyan Cinemas

Events  /  9th February 2026

January marked a meaningful homecoming for Matabeleland, as the film returned to Kenyan cinemas following its local premiere at NBO Film Festival on 18th October 2025.

We were glad to begin the year by sharing the film with audiences in Nairobi through a month-long cinema run at Unseen Nairobi, running from 3rd to 31st January. Screening the film consistently over several weeks created space for more people to experience it on the big screen, engage with its themes, and sit with the conversations it opens up.

One of the highlights of the Unseen run was a special Q&A screening, where Director Nyasha Kadandara and Producer Sam Soko joined audiences for a post-screening discussion. The exchange was thoughtful, generous, and deeply engaged, with audiences reflecting on the film’s historical context, emotional weight, and contemporary relevance. We’re especially grateful to Wanjeri Gakuru for moderating the conversation and helping guide the discussion.

Unseen Nairobi screenings continue through the end of the month and then the film will screen at Prestige Cinema in February, with dates to be announced soon.

We’re excited to keep building opportunities for more African audiences to encounter Matabeleland in communal spaces and cinema.
